Club History
Introduction
This history offers a broad view of the Society’s development from its founding in 1892 through to the present day, tracing a pattern of steady adaptation. From early meetings at St John’s School, through a series of moves across Woolwich and Plumstead, to its current home at Shrewsbury House, the club has continually responded to changing circumstances while maintaining a clear purpose. Alongside this general account, a more personal perspective is provided in Barry Jarvis’s recollections, capturing the spirit, challenges, and character of the club from within. A third strand places the Society in the context of 1892, linking its origins to wider events of the time and offering a sense of the world into which it was born. Together, these three views provide a rounded picture: the facts of change, the experience of members, and the historical moment that shaped its beginnings.
